Gay's Road Trip to Sylacauga, Nashville, Memphis and Tupelo
Welcome to another edition of Gay's BR5-49 pages! It's true! Gay actually went to Nashville over the Turkey Day 1999 holidays to see BR5-49 and visit the illustrious SuSu Green. Here's a quick wrap-up of what happened, courtesy of Sylacauga Today!
However, we have the FULL story....with pictures!
Go on, take a look!
Of course, lower Broadway was a MUST. Here is the famous Robert's Western World! |
Here is the famous Ryman Auditorium, home of the original Grand Old Opry. Gay swears this is the ONLY picture of SuSu she took -- that's the back of her head in the lower right-hand corner! |
The Bluegrass Inn is also a famous bar/club/eating joint. SuSu and Gay had some breakfast here.....and some interesting conversations with the locals. |
The girls' first show was at the Exit Inn. One of the first people Gay saw on the trip was Jason from the Shelton "Hank" Williams III band. "You're the last person I thought I'd see here!" he cried! They had fun rehashing the Nammys and Hank's appearance there. |
Of course...it was all about the show! Here's Gary and that new gee-tar of his. |
| The stage was a little cramped -- but the music was as big and full as ever. |
Jay and Chuck get DOWN. Do you think they were playing "Play That Funky Music" or "18 Wheels and a Crowbar?" |
| I think Chuck is doing "Waiting for the Axe to Fall..." although maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part! |
After the show, there was hobnobbing galore! Chuck, in his famous "Tall Paul" pose, greets Gay with a hug! |
| Shaw took a moment to say hello also! He's such a sweetheart! |
The next day, it was on to Memphis for another great show. Here's Chuck smiling and working the crowd!
| Gary looks like he could have been onstage at Shea Stadium in this shot. Do you think he knows "I'm Down" or "Ticket To Ride"? You never know! |
Chuck plays on that Gretsch! What a gorgeous gee-tar! You can feel free to make your own comment about Chuck! |
| There's Smilin' jay doing his thing in a cool black & white ensemble. Go, Jay go! |
Jay explains how to sing along with "What's the Matter at the Mill!?" It DONE BROKE DOWN! |
As a bonus -- here are a couple of shots we haven't had time to post from the summer of 1999 at the Greek Theatre and beyond!
| Maybe you haven't seen the purse SuSu created especially for Gay? It's a little metal number....with something special inside. Gay models the purse outside of the band's rehearsal studio in North Hollywood. |
| SuSu magically placed a Chuck Mead collage inside. Gay had him autograph it at one of the many shows she's been to. Shaw jokingly wanted to confiscate the purse as "Unofficial Merchandise." Chuck's mom LOVED it! |
Everyone KNOWS the BR's travel by bus -- as most acts do. Here's a shot of the bus parked outside of the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.
We had a nice time outside of the Greek, listening to the show. Hey, those tickets on the Brian Setzer Tour weren't CHEAP....and the sound was pretty good outside of the theatre. We met Donnie outside and had a long discussion about tractors, pick-ups and his "girls" -- the violin and mandolin he plays onstage.
| We also had the pleasure of meeting Jay's dad, Jim McDowell. Don't they look alike!!!? They had lots of fun seeing the sights. |
