DIVA NEWS ARCHIVE -- OCTOBER 2001
A PHOTO SPECIAL FROM THE FOURTH ANNUAL NATIVE AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS HELD IN ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO.
Arigon Starr with Ellen Bello
Ellen is the heart and soul of the Native American Music Association. She founded the group back in 1998 and has been tirelessly promoting Native music since then. She's also been a Diva fan from way back. This year, Ellen and all the NAMA crew had the 9-11 Tragedy foremost in their minds as their offices are just blocks away from Ground Zero. Despite it all -- they managed to put on a fine awards program and after-party celebration. Thank you Ellen and everyone at NAMA! You guys ROCK!
The Prettiest Girls at the After Party -- Leslie Jollie, Mara Peters, Crystal Gayle and Gay Wahpecome
As everyone knows, stars like Arigon travel with a posse! The Nammy crew this year consisted of Arigon's parents Ken and Ruth Wahpecome, sister Gay Wahpecome, drummer Nicholas Peters, his sister Mara Peters, manager Janet Miner and gal pal from Southwest Washington State, Leslie Jollie. Here they are with Lifetime Achievement winner Crystal Gayle. Everyone behaved themselves -- especially Crystal! ;)
Arigon Starr with Delphine Tsinajinnie
Nothing succeeds like success -- and one of the newest stars on the scene is Navajo singer Delphine Tsinajinnie. Her debut CD "Mother's Word" captured a lot of attention -- and garnered a "Best Debut Artist" award for Del. Arigon and Delphine have been friends for a few years now -- and you'll often see them huddling in the corner, trading road stories. Delphine is the REAL deal -- accept no substitutes!
Arigon Starr with Joanne Shenandoah
Joanne Shenandoah is from the Oneida Nation of New York. She's probably one of the best known singers in Indian country. Yet, she is also a Diva fan and friend. Here, the ladies share a laugh while numerous snapshots are taken. It's like that -- and ain't it just part of a Diva's life! You betcha!
Crystal Gayle with Arigon Starr
Here's the photo we've got featured on the front page. Award-winning singer Crystal Gayle poses with Arigon at the Nammy show after-party. Arigon complemented Crystal on the special song she recorded for radio host Art Bell. Art is probably Crystal's most ardent fan -- and she is such a sweet person. She didn't even mind it when Arigon told her to be sure to get "one of them fried chicken legs." Being a Diva can be dangerous! She's always in fear of being slapped! AAAY!
Rodney Grant with Arigon Starr
Though you might be after some beefcake about now -- and we're so proud we can bring it to you.
Here is film star Rodney Grant hamming it up with the Diva at the Sandia Casino. Rodney was the MC for the event -- an man, was he full of energy!
The two are either a)comparing sleeves....or b) doing some weird Native tango dance. You be the judge!
