FIRST...HERE ARE THE BOOKS...NOVELS, SHORT STORIES AND POETRY

TEN LITTLE INDIANS

THE LATEST SHERMAN ALEXIE COLLECTION!!

THE TOUGHEST INDIAN IN THE WORLD

"Dear John Wayne" is but one of the wonderful short stories in this fine collection. It's all pure Sherman...and the story about the "Colonial Aptitude Test" had me rolling on the floor. There's also some very creepy science fiction here too....and stories from Urban Seattle. Watch out for them NDN bars now -- you never know who you'll meet. Not for the little ones, share this with your older more sophisticated pals.

INDIAN KILLER

Whodunnit? John Smith? Reggie Polatkin? That lil' NDN gal? Hmm....maybe it was that manic white history professor. You will see yourself at the UW Pow-Wow...and the wilds of urban Seattle. This novel makes a great case for the Indian Child Welfare Act -- which advocates that Indian children be raised in Indian families. Otherwise.....we might end up with a world of John Smiths, lost, not knowing their culture and dangerous!

RESERVATION BLUES

Indian rockers take to the road as Sherman weaves together images of Robert Johnson, mystical elders and strange Indian wannabees. The music isn't what it's cracked up to be -- and the members of the Reservation Blues band have to make the decision to stay true to themselves....or conform to mainstream stereotypes. Oh, Thomas! Don't do it! Contains one of my favorite phrases ever -- "You know you're Indian if there was ever time you didn't want to be an Indian."

THE LONE RANGER AND TONTO FISTFIGHT IN HEAVEN

The book that started it all -- short stories from the rez that became the basis of the film, "Smoke Signals." Meet the Polatkins, Builds-The-Fires and the Josephs...and lots of other random NDNs. May possibly be the first book to contain the word...ENNIT.

SUMMER OF BLACK WIDOWS

Okay, I admit. I've got this book tucked away neatly with my other books in the "TO BE READ" pile. I don't thinjk Sherman would mind sharing space with Dr. Cornel West and Leslie Marmon Silko. When I read this one, I'll put some proper commentary by it. I can just tell ya...poetry by Sherman. Read and enjoy -- tell me what you THINK!

WATER FLOWING HOME

All right....more of Sherman's poems. However, be warned -- this is a special edition (it's autographed!) that may be in the reach of those of your with trust funds or per caps every month. (It retails for $150.) If anyone owns this one, let me know if I should hock my fine NDN jewlery for this collection.

THE BUSINESS OF FANCY DANCING

A foFrom 1992 -- stories and poems from Sherman. Yep, Thomas Builds-The-Fire is here -- so is Lester FallsApart. A line from the poem "Distances" says: "I do not speak my native tongue.Except that is for the dirty words. I can tell you what I think of you in two languages." Reminds me of a conversation I had with a Kickapoo girl in Albuquerque...AAAAAY. You'll like this lil' book!

ONE STICK SONG

This is Sherman's most current poetry collection. When I went to grab my copy at Vroman's Pasadena...they were ALL gone. Might have to order online or venture back to Skylight Books in Los Feliz to see if they have any copies lying around. What do you think of his latest work?

OLD SHIRTS AND NEW SKINS

An anthology of various Native writers, including Mr. Alexie. Paula Gunn Allen's involved...so it must be a good one. On my "TO BUY" list....so stay stuned for my review.

THE FIRST INDIAN ON THE MOON

This book from Hanging Loose Press (published 1993) has one of my favorite Sherman poems -- "On The Amtrak From Boston To New York City." His comments about Don Henley would make Mojo Nixon stand up and cheer! Don't remember Mojo Nixon? He had a song out called "Don Henley Must Die." You go, Mojo! More good stuff from Sherman.

VARIOUS AND SUNDRY YOU'LL WANT TO ADD TO YOUR COLLECTION!

SMOKE SIGNALS: THE SCREENPLAY

"Marvel at the path a novel takes to the screen. Sherman's side comments are really great! You'll see Miramax's "Harvey Scissorhands" in action as scenes featuring Suzy Song and the rez fall away. Some of the cut scenes might make you sad...but overall...it seems that Miramax's edits kinda made sense. My favorite overall part is Sherman's intro about his family having a BetaMax video player. Dang! We werent' the only NDN family to have one, too.

INDIAN KILLER -- The Audio Tape

Listen closely as Sherman reads you the story of John Smith. This is good listening while driving the I-40, I tell you what!

RESERVATION BLUES -- THE SOUNDTRACK

Indian rock god Jim Boyd teamed with Sherman to bring some of his poetry to life. Some of these tunes made their way into the "Smoke Signals" soundtrack, as you'll see. Jim Boyd used to be in legendary group XIT (they were the first and only Indian band signed to MOTOWN!) -- and he has released some other fine CDs. Check him out if he comes to your town.

SMOKE SIGNALS -- THE VIDEO

The video that started it all! Join Thomas Builds-The-Fire and his sidekick Victor Joseph as they travel to Arizona to return the body of Victor's dad. Gary Farmer, Irene Bedard, Tantoo Cardinal appear with the FABULOUS Evan Adams and Adam Beach. Watch for the Tom Skerritt cameo -- and the Sherman walk-on. Wasn't that Jim Boyd strumming the guitar in the flashback party scene? Hmmm....

SMOKE SIGNALS -- THE MOVIE SOUNDTRACK

Ulali, Jim Boyd, Dar Williams and that fine NDN chant "John Wayne's Teeth" are here for your listening enjoyment. Plus, there's B.C. Smith's fine score for you to remember the movie by. It's all good...and you know you MUST have it for your collection.

THE BUSINESS OF FANCY DANCING

The latest in the Sherman Collection -- a very modern tale about some very modern Indians. Evan Adams is delightful as always! Sherman shows the dark side of Native life. You almost wonder how much of this film is autobiographical -- especially the glib chatter during the author/poet's book signings. AAAAY! Interesting to watch -- and we can't wait for another Alexie project!
