Yeh, feel the California sun beating down Yeh, see the pretty roses sprout from the ground You hear voices whisper through the mission walls Louder than all the kids and their parents’ cel phone calls If you stop to listen You can hear their hearts beating loud CHORUS Can’t keep those California Indians down They’re tough and resilient And holding their ground Can’t keep those California Indians down From Miwok to Viejas They are still standing proud Toypurina led a mission revolt Ishi emerged from the woods and took the whole world by storm Pomo Basket weavers practice their art Cahuilla Bird Singers are practicing their parts If you stop to listen You can hear their hears beating loud CHORUS Can’t keep those California Indians down They’re tough and resilient And holding their ground Can’t keep those California Indians down From Chumash to Choinumni They are still standing proud If you stop to listen You can hear their hearts beating loud CHORUS Can’t keep those California Indians down They’re tough and resilient And holding their ground Can’t keep those California Indians down From Wintu to Wiyot They are still standing proud Written by Arigon Starr © 2002 Starrwatcher Publishing (ASCAP) Lyrics reprinted by Kind Permission |

| ABOUT CALIFORNIA INDIANS
This is an homage to all of my friends who are from California based tribes. California has one of the largest Indian populations in the United States. All the tribes mentioned in the song are REAL ones -- and they are from all over the state. California ia more than surfers, Hollywood and new agers -- it's Indian Country! Also -- this track is the theme song of KPFK-FM's weekly radio show "American Indian Airwaves," broadcast in Los Angeles every Wednesday afternoon at 3:00pm. |
