Wanted to note the passing of one of my friends in Portland, Oregon — John Talley. He was the long-time host of “Indian World,” a weekly Native American-themed show on community radio station KBOO-FM.
John and KBOO-FM were one of the earliest supporters of my music. When I released my first CD, “Meet the Diva” back in 1997, I mailed a copy to the station hoping they would find a place for the pop music I put together. KBOO was one of the very few stations who actually contacted ME and told me they had added my CD to their playlist.
In 1998, I ventured out on one of m first “tours” — which was really me, my guitar and the task of returning a friend’s car from San Diego to Seattle. I made lots of ...

I made lots of new friends that trip, many who have become like family. My Portland area host that trip was the beautiful Cathy Kehoe and her fantastic daughter Mary Sue Gulzow, who I had met the previous year in Las Vegas. Cathy’s son, Gary Bennett was a member of the ultra-cool alt-country band BR5-49, and me and my sister Gay Wahpecome followed them around like…well, groupies. Okay, I’ll own that! AAY!

I made sure to contact KBOO and let them know I was in town. John Talley told me to come on down and they would put me on the airwaves. Boy, did they! I brought my guitar and performed acoustic versions of songs like “Navajo Radio” and “Indian Bones.” John had a young co-host with him at the time, Spider Moccasin aka Marcus Moseley. We all got on like a house on fire. There was much laughter, heartfelt stories and great music every time we got together.

The last time I saw John, he was definitely slowing down. He told me that he was okay with that…and that he had lived a full life. I had to marvel at his journey. He was a great storyteller and always had lots of plans and ambitions to remind folks that Native people are still here.

Wanted to also share this note from Marcus/Spider about his last visits with John.

I have been to the death bed of John Talley twice in recent times. The oldest native American programmer from Community Radio KBOO 90.7 FM has not got long to live now. Portland, Oregon is about to lose the radio show host with the friendliest, most optimistic tribal content ever heard in these parts for more than a quarter century.

John Talley’s people are from New York, but he made his home in the Pacific NW after the Korean War. He had his own coin and rare stamp shop for awhile, before becoming a volunteer radio show host in the early 70′s at KBOO. Talley has had many co-host sidekicks, including Samantha from Eugene, Derek Romero, Chris Lee, Red Wilow, and myself.

After the fall that broke his hip a couple years ago, Talley’s legendary status as a gregarious lone wolf, prowling the taverns of Portland’s SE, finally ended, leaving behind countless drinking buddies and old friends. But for awhile, John could still be seen zipping about on his scooter, always smiling his friendly smile from underneath his immaculate white van dyke beard and his shiny bald head.

John Talley absolutely refused to become a resident of any old folks’ home or retirement center. He preferred his independence right up to the end, and has been feisty with certain nurses. John’s body might be ready to quit, but his spirit will never give up the ghost! Maybe now, after so many long decades being Portland’s premier tribal radio man, old John Talley is finally about to move on to his Happy Hunting Grounds.

Please pause for a moment to say a prayer for Community Radio KBOO 90.7 FM DJ John Talley, the host of Indian World, and about the nicest, sweetest old man one could ever hope to be mentored by. My celebrated songwriting would not even exist without the broadcast destination, opportunity, and warm audience that Talley shared with me, for which I will be forever grateful.

Marcus Moseley AKA Mr. Spider Moccasin

If you’re in Portland or near a computer on April 1st, Spider/Marcus is going to pay tribute to John Talley live on KBOO. Here’s the details:

Spider Moccasin
Memorial broadcast concert for the late, great John Talley, host of Indian World
Live on the air, after 10 years
Sunday, April 1, 2012, 6:30 – 8 PM
Community Radio KBOO, 90.7 FM, Portland, Oregon
www.kboo.fm

I’m gonna tune in and remember all the good times with John. He was one memorable Mohawk man.

All I can say is…you shoulda been there!
I traveled from Los Angeles to Lewiston, Idaho on Tuesday, March 6th to be part of Lewis-Clark State College’s annual Native American Awareness Week.
As most of you know, Lewis-Clark has an active Native student population, led by Bob Sobotta. As you might have also known, Bob is my friend Angel Sobotta’s husband. It was an honor to be asked to join them and well worth the time I took out of my busy schedule to travel to Nez Perce country.
Bob and the students booked me for a solo acoustic performance at the Silvethorne Theater, which is a beautiful old space on the campus of Lewis-Clark State College.
We had a great crowd of children, elders, students and community members that evening. I had the pleasure of performing a lot of my personal favorite songs, plus debuted a re-tooled version of “Celilo Falls.” “Celilo Falls” ...

We had a great crowd of children, elders, students and community members that evening. I had the pleasure of performing a lot of my personal favorite songs, plus debuted a re-tooled version of “Celilo Falls.” “Celilo Falls” was originally debuted at the Museum of Warm Springs fundraiser back in 2010. I revisited the track, writing new verses and keeping the hummable chorus. I’ll put up a sample of the song in the next few weeks. I really like how it turned out.

I also had a group of community kids onstage to do the chorus of “Junior Frybread” with me. Those kids were so much fun. They had a great time pointing to folks in the theater on the “Best bread is over there” line in the chorus of the song. I wish I always had “Junior Frybread” singers with me onstage.

On Thursday, I did a 90-minute lecture about what to expect from the entertainment business as a Native artist. A talk like this could get really discouraging, especially with the few roles and projects on offer for Native actors. I also spoke about surviving in the music business, which is similar to survival as an actor. The crowd was lively and asked a lot of great questions. Was also thrilled to meet once again Claire, the manager from KWIS-FM, the Couer D’Alene tribal radio station. Claire and I first met at last year’s National Federation of Community Broadcaster’s convention in San Francisco, CA. Patrick Dundas, also from KWIS-FM, taped the lecture for later broadcast on their station. Really did my best to encourage folks, but to also realize that there is no overnight success and that you only fail by giving up!

Friday was a short 3-hour workshop on radio drama. Several of the previous participants from last year’s writer’s workshop were there (hey to Art, Janice and Sarah!) to go over the basics. I revamped a couple of unproduced “Super Indian” radio scripts for us to work on. We went through the scripts a couple of times and had lots of laughter over the whole process. It was a kick to have one of the other fine, learned scholars from the Native American Awareness Week join us — Dr. Beth Piatote from UC Berkeley. She had the fun of voicing “Diogi,” the super-intelligent dog character in the “Super Indian” series. I may have to edit and post for your enjoyment….sometime down the road.

Angel Sobotta and her lovely mom Rosa Yearout at the Native American Awareness Week Pow-Wow at Lewis-Clark State College, March 2012

The fun wasn’t over yet — Friday night there was an excellent Pow-Wow that brought out community, faculty and students. It was great to see all the kids and elders there. They had over ten drum groups there and there was non-stop dancing. The kids at the pow-wow had the most beautiful smiles and regalia. The elders who were there stood tall and proud and brought a tear to the eye. There were tons of folks in the stands, enjoying frybread and such.

There was a humorous moment following an honor/giveaway. A young pizza delivery dude was wandering around the gym and headed straight toward one of drums. This is something I’ve never witnessed….a pizza delivery to the drum. Yes, it really happened. (Actually, a guy from the crowd came and collected the pizza…but isn’t it a wonder you don’t see this more often? AAAY!)

Was also great to see Angel Sobotta’s mom, Rosa Yearout in full regalia. She is one the community’s most treasured elders and she’s sweet on top of that! Both ladies are such treasures and it’s great to spend time with them. Here they are in their glory!

One of the other pluses of spending time in Lewiston was staying with Freda Jagelski. Freda is the sister of Thirza Defoe, a fine actor, writer and singer who I know through Native Voices at the Autry. Thirza and I led the Nimiipuu Writers’ Workshop last year.

Thirza introduced us last year and we got on like a house on fire!

The Jagelskis were my hosts for the entire trip. I enjoyed spending time with Freda, her husband Nick and their daughter Josie.

We did something I had never done before…got on a small boat, launched on the Snake River and went bass fishing. Yes, that’s me….two-fisted water and coffee drinker after we got back. Did we catch anything? Only the breeze! AAAY! I will have to make a return trip and show those bass who’s boss, ennit?

Arigon in front of the Jagelski's Bass Boat along the Snake River

All in all, it was a fantastic trip. If you ever get a chance to visit with the Native community in Lewiston or Lapwai — do it! They’re working hard to keep culture alive and in the forefront. It really made me glad to know that so many of the young people in the community were making great efforts to learn their tribal language and ways. Not easy in a Facebook/Twitter world.

They’re fun folks and the scenery is breath-taking. I know I’ll return to the Snake River again….and probably take another drive along the Clearwater River. It’s so peaceful and gorgeous there.

Derek Thunder will be making a comeback in the next edition of “Super Indian.” That’s issue #4…”Technoskin.”
Loving this comic book stuff!! Howah, indeed!

Greetings from Los Angeles, CA! It’s been a busy season so far…and I’m stealing a few minutes away from myself to quickly update.
If you’re interested in some behind-the-scenes info on the “Super Indian” comic, there’s an awesome interview that was posted this morning on Bitch Media. Here’s the link:

It’s part one of two….and I’ll give you a heads-up when the next part is online.
Enjoy my goofy self-portrait. It’s the first one I’ve done in a LONG while. I am now officially part of the “Super Indian” universe. Hooray!

http://bitchmagazine.org/post/beyond-the-panel-an-interview-with-arigon-starr-of-super-indian-part-one

It’s part one of two….and I’ll give you a heads-up when the next part is online.

Enjoy my goofy self-portrait. It’s the first one I’ve done in a LONG while. I am now officially part of the “Super Indian” universe. Hooray!

I’m a dedicated trial-watcher….at least when it has something to do with Los Angeles. I watched most of the Rodney King trial…then the OJ Simpson trial. In fact, me and my fabulous co-worker at Showtime Networks (yay for Michele Morris!) got into the trial so much, we used part of her white board to make a list of what actors would play whom in the “OJ Trial” TV movie. I’m not sure how accurate we were in our casting sessions, but we sure had fun thinking of actors who looked like Johnnie Cochran or Mark Furhman or Marcia Clark.

Arigon with one of the many decorated black bears in and around Cherokee, North Carolina. This one is dressed as the famous Cherokee linguist, Sequoyah.

Since I last wrote, I’ve been to North Carolina and back. I must say that I had an exciting time visiting Cherokee. The Southeast Writers Gathering was a small, but focused group. Robert J. Conley, the amazing Cherokee Author/Historian gathering folks at the Museum of the Cherokee.

As in my previous posts, I have been to Cherokee but a very, very long time ago. When I caught up with my Mom, she reminded me that we had stayed overnight as a family. “You and your sister were fascinated with the creek that ran behind the small motel we stayed at. We had to stop several times along the road west so you and Gay could dip your feet in the water.”

Yep, that creek is still there and still crystal clear. I didn’t get a chance to kick off my boots and get my feet wet.

I presented a panel on songwriting — which was really an extended version of my live show. It’s always fun to demystify the process for folks…but I know that when somebody says “It was just that simple” — that it probably wasn’t. I did encourage folks to write, write, write and got to hear some of the other folks’ music. I really enjoyed listening to Sara Snyder’s music that she was creating especially for her Cherokee students. Imagine Lady Gaga singing in the Cherokee language! That’s how to get the kids interested in learning and using their language. Smart, talented lady!

L-R: Lee Francis IV, Arigon, Evelyn Conley, Janet Miner. The Wordcraft Circle of Native Storytellers represents Native writers in many genres. Here's group leader Lee Francis with Arigon, Evelyn and Janet in Asheville, North Carolina.

Was also privileged to meet Kim Roppolo and Lee Francis of the Wordcraft Circle of Native Storytellers. Their group has been around for a number of years and they help Native writers find mentors, plus give out annual awards for outstanding writing/performing achievement. I’m a past recipient and was really honored to meet Lee. His father, Lee Francis III was an amazing writer and was a champion of all Native writers prior to his passing. Lee’s son, Lee IV is keeping the group going. You can check out their work at their website, Wordcraft Circle. They are continuing many of the original programs, plus starting some new ones, including a new group for Native comic book writers/creators. More on that as the story develops.

Evelyn Conley also made sure that we got a special tour of the Cherokee School which is a brand new facility for K-12 tribal members and community on the Cherokee Reservation. Their facility is an amazing show place and is the best school I’ve ever seen. It was so fabulous, I wished I could enroll as a student. They teach the basics, but including tribal language and heritage. The kids are learning math alongside intricate traditional weaving and beadwork. Part of their mission is to also get the students interested in reading and writing. I’m now working with the school to develop a special writing program for February 2012. The school is sponsoring a Native Heritage Month and there will be writers from all over the country coming to teach the students what they know. I was really thrilled to be asked to be part of their mission and it’s going to be fun…and a challenge. Again, more on this as the story develops!

Traditional Cherokee men performing onstage outside the Museum of the Cherokee in North Carolina. These are the Cherokee Warriors.

The conference was over on Thursday, which was followed by the Southeast Tribes Gathering. At their huge outdoor stage, dancers from the Creek, Chickasaw, Choctaw and Western Cherokee gathered for social and exhibition-style dancing. There were stomp dances, ant dances, bear dances, two-steps…and some great storytelling and singing.

I was invited to perform — and did a short set on Friday evening. As many of you know, I wrote a song called “Mountain Windsong,” that is based on Robert Conley’s novel of the same name. It’s the story of two Cherokee lovers separated by the Trail of Tears. Robert wrote a happy ending for the two — and the song is celebration of love, sacrifice and determination. Every time I perform this song….Robert and his wife Evelyn end up in tears. This time, I had to really fight back the tears as I had an incredible wave of emotion performing this song in the place it was actually set.

Robert and Evelyn also gave us a tour of the entire Rez…including the large outdoor theater that is home to the long-running play “Until These Hills,” the big-as-Vegas Cherokee Casino and Kituwah — the original home of the Cherokee Nation.

Yep, it's one my kinfolks, Cherokee Outlaw Henry Starr.

As I’ve said before, my Mom’s mom, Flora Snow Cornell, was Cherokee and Seneca. Flora’s family were one of the many survivors of the Trail of Tears. She didn’t talk much about the old days that I remember — only that her brothers and Uncles were characters. Family lore includes Uncle Jack, the bootlegger…and of course, legendary outlaw Belle Starr.

Whenever anyone mentions Belle Starr in our family, they’re quick to say she’s only related by marriage!

Belle’s husband Sam Starr was a direct relation.

Robert Conley also told me that his hero is one of those Starrs — Henry Starr, who was a notorious outlaw who pulled for a double-bank robbery in the early 1900s. Henry Starr holds the record for most bank robberies, but he’s sadly forgotten. But as Paul Williams said in “Phantom of the Paradise,” “That’s today, Philbin….today.” Henry Starr will rise again!

That’s all for today….but there will be more, much more, as the week plugs along.

As many of you know, my Dad was born in Oklahoma and was a member of the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma. He spent his growing up years in and around McLoud, Oklahoma. Like most Indians at the time — he grew up dirt poor and luxury was something you saw at the movies.

As Dad got older and suffered from arthritis, he would dispatch me or my sister to the local Blockbuster (remember those?) and rent a movie. He called it his own version of “The Jake” — because the movies there were never first run!

When I sit down at my TV these days with a Netflix DVD (remember those? AAY!) — I think of my Dad saying, “What’s on at the Jake?”

I’ll never forget my Dad and his irrepressible spirit and humor. He had a tough road — but he could always come up with a smile and some wry humor just when we all needed it.

I’ve known Robert for many, many years and he and his wife Evelyn are dear friends. Robert, as you probably know, is an award-winning Cherokee Author and Historian and a multiple winner of the Western Spur writer’s award. He’s the author of many books that I have on my shelves, including “Ned Christie’s War,” “Crazy Snake,” War Woman, “Mountain Windsong,” and the list goes on.

The Writers’ Gathering takes place at The Museum of the Cherokee Indian, 589 Tsali Blvd., Cherokee, North Carolina on September 14 & 15th. I’ll be presenting a panel on songwriting on Thursday morning (September 15th) at 10:00am. The cost of the workshop and event is FREE — so if you’re in the area, come on down and enjoy some lively presentations and discussions.

There’s a group of fine speakers planning on attending, including: Lee Francis (Laguna), Executive Director of Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers; Dr. Kimberly Roppolo (Cherokee/Creek) from the faculty at the University of Oklahoma; Vernon Schmid (Cherokee); and Bob Perry, (Chickasaw).

In response to yesterday’s post about the Indian guy asking for five dollars a photo — Agent 49 aka Dion Francis noted that the practice is known as “Chiefing” — and that it probably put his kids through college. Robert Conley wrote in his book “Cherokee Thoughts: Honest & Uncensored:”

“Here was a Cherokee, on the Cherokee Reservation, in a Cherokee town, doing exactly what the Hollywood filmmakers were doing. Here was a Cherokee feeding the myth that all Indians are alike, enforcing the ignorance that the general public was carrying around in its head, or its many heads. I was sickened. I was disgusted. I was ashamed. I was….”

Robert talks about a Creek artist who created stunning paintings of Plains Indians…even though he was from a Southeastern Tribe. The artist’s explanation — it’s because “white people want to buy those.”

Robert continues:

“When a Cherokee from North Carolina was asked about another practitioner of that racket, Carl Standingdeer, he gave the following answer. ‘He’s put several kids through college doing that.’ It’s hard to argue with success.”

See you in North Carolina!

In my continuing pledge to keep writing — here’s another entry. It’s a stunning Monday here in Los Angeles. The sun in shining (as usual) — and I’m continuing the work on “Super Indian” as promised. Right now, “Hubert’s Blog” is about 65 percent finished. Just finished inking Page 16…and the pencil work has begun on Page 17. The total issue runs 23 pages….so I’m getting there!

I’m also prepping to attend/speak at the upcoming Southeast Indian Writers Gathering in Cherokee, North Carolina. A host of Native American writers are converging on the Cherokee Museum and there will be a few days worth of panels about all kinds of writing. I hope to have more information about this later today for tomorrow’s blog.

My guitar is making the trip — so most likely there will be a performance as well. It’s gonna be fun.

The last time I was in North Carolina, I was a wee child. My family was driving from Maryland to Oklahoma and we stopped in Cherokee on the way. While there, my dad, Ken Wahpecome saw this old Indian man decked out in full Western Plains regalia. Yep, we are talking headdress, buckskin, beadwork. [Why is it that even Indians want to get their photos taken with other Indians? (AAAY!)]

Now, as most of you know, Cherokee people don’t wear buckskin — you’re likely to see Cherokee men in ribbon shirts and turbans, not the stereotypical Hollywood Indian wear.

My Dad wanted to make sure we got the full experience of what was back then a small, sleepy town. Cherokee, North Carolina is home to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and this was way before the Casino days. Dad walked up to the man and asked to have him take a picture with me and my sister Gay.

The old man said, “Sure. That’ll be five dollars.”

My Dad was incensed. He gathered us up and stormed off. “Can you believe that guy? Didn’t he notice we were Indians? I’m gonna start charging five dollars for my picture, too.”

My Dad, Ken Wahpecome back in his Navy Recruiter days in the 1970's.

He always told that story with an ironic laugh.

That’s a black and white photo of my Dad from back in the 1970′s. I think he could have totally sold his photo for five bucks a pop.

There will be more about North Carolina tomorrow. I have a feeling!

It’s Arigon Starr here. Another fabulous sunny day in Los Angeles. Decided I really needed to blog away and keep everyone updated on the doings here at Wacky Productions.
The reason I mentioned Rihanna (who I think is a great singer & artist) — was watching a replay of MTV’s Video Music Awards last weekend. Seems like 80% of the nominated videos were artists….”Featuring Rihanna.” That girl has been busy!
Lady Gaga was the host and throughout the evening, she stayed in character as her “Jo Calderone” character. First of all….Gaga reminded me of one of the Juicy Fruits from the film “Phantom of the Paradise.” If you’re not familiar with “Phantom,” start with The Swan Archives, a site jam-packed with information about the production. It’s a film from Brian DePalma starring Paul Williams that was released in 1974. The Juicy Fruits were a take on Sha-Na-Na, a 1950′s styled ...

It’s a film from Brian DePalma starring Paul Williams that was released in 1974. The Juicy Fruits were a take on Sha-Na-Na, a 1950′s styled group. Here’s how I imagine Jo performing with the Juicy Fruits.

Lady Gaga as Jo Calderone -- fronting the retro band "The Juicy Fruits."

As you can see, I’m clearly not right in the head. Photoshop is my friend!

We all had a good laugh over that. We also enjoyed the guest appearance of rock legend Brian May with “Jo.”Brian was the mastermind behind the classic song “We Will Rock You” and lead guitarist for Queen. I’m sure you knew that! Just testing your trivia skills!

I’ve been slaving over the artwork, coloring and lettering for “Super Indian.” As you know, the current storyline is “Hubert’s Blog” and has been running since April. Yes, that’s a BRAND NEW COMIC every Monday. There’s also a new sub-comic called “Kyle,” which follows the adventures of a hairless cat.

I promised a few photos from the San Diego Comic Con. Here’s one of my favorites:

Arigon hangs out at San Diego Comic Con with her pal, the Donnie Darko Bunny

Had a few wonderful meet-ups with fellow Native comic book creators Jacques LaGrange and Teddy Tso. We talked about forming a collective of Native American comic book artists and writers to help support each others’ work. The group is still in the talking phase, but hope to have news on that soon.

Other groups have formed coalitions….I don’t see why our people can’t do that. Right now, we don’t have much of a presence at the larger Comic conventions. Jacques LaGrange has been really great in raising awareness in Arizona, but all of us need to keep doing what we’re doing and shouting from the rooftops about our work.

On another front, I spent a fantastic long weekend in Lapwai, Idaho working with the Nez Perce Language Program on a radio version of one of their traditional stories. The talented Thirza Defoe was also a part of the group leadership as we put a few tribal members through their paces as writers and actors. We did tape the production and the show will hopefully air on KIYE-FM, the local tribal radio station. Angel Sobotta pulled out all the stops and assembled a talented bunch of folks. Thirza also performed a short dance demonstration at Lapwai Park. Even though it was over 90 degrees, Thirza gave her all and really put on a stunning show.

That’s today’s wrap-up. There will be more…much more….soon!
